Lottery Money For Arkansas? Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter has rounded up the signatures, now he will present them. Halter is lobbying for a state lottery in Arkansas, one of the few states in the country with no lottery system.
Halter has rounded up 138,000 signatures that will now be verified, counted, and submitted on July 7th. At that time, Halter will have thirty days to submit additional signatures if it is shown that not enough were submitted the first time.
In order to get on the ballot in November, 77,468 signatures were required. With
Halter claims that a state run lottery would generate $100 million annually. The money would be used for helping fund college scholarships for the state's children. The numbers are not universally accepted, however.
Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families are disputing Halter's figures. They believe the lottery would only bring in $61.5 million. For a state that is struggling with their economy like most other states, even the low end figure of $61.5 million would be a boost.
